Treatment of Psychosomatic Disorders

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is often the treatment of choice for a psychosomatic disorder. This therapy helps patients learn new ways to cope with and solve their problems as they gain a deeper understanding of their condition or circumstances. Patients will also learn to set realistic life goals and identify and change behaviors or thoughts that have negative effects on their lives.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that a person’s own unrealistic thoughts and beliefs lead to their negative moods and unhealthy behavior. It rests on the theory that other people, situations, and events are not responsible for a person’s mood or behavior; instead it is that person’s reaction that creates the negative impact.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy May Help the Following Conditions or Problems

  • Grief
  • Anger
  • Relationship problems
  • Sleep disorder
  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders

For people young or older, who experience these or other conditions, Cognitive Behavior Therapy helps the patient become aware of their unreasonable thoughts and beliefs so they can view the situation more realistically and react in a healthier way.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy Techniques Are Effective…

  • for anxiety
  • for ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder)
  • for weight loss
  • and much more

There are Typically 5 Steps of Cognitive Behavior Therapy:

  1. Identify troubling situations or problems. These may be the result of a medical condition, a mental illness, or a disorder of some kind.
  2. Become aware of thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about those situations or conditions. Once these can be determined, the patient is encouraged to explore them and how they are interpreted by the patient.
  3. Identify negative or inaccurate thinking. To do this, the cognitive therapist may ask the patient to pay close attention to their physical, emotional, and behavioral responses to a troubling event.
  4. Challenge negative or inaccurate thinking. The therapist will ask the patient to question whether their thoughts are based on facts and logic or on a distortion of the situation.
  5. Change thoughts and beliefs. The ultimate goal is to replace negative, inaccurate thoughts with positive, accurate ones that are more realistic.

Completing these steps will help give the patient the power to cope with their situation in a healthy way and feel better about themselves and their life. The treatment can help the patient:

  • Gain a better understanding of their condition or situation
  • Identify and change behaviors or thoughts that negatively affect their lives
  • Explore relationships and experiences
  • Find better ways to cope and solve problems
  • Learn to set realistic goals for their lives
  • Feel better about themselves
  • Reduce the likelihood of a relapse
